Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a condition where the spine twists and curves to the side.

It is estimated that around 2% of people in Singapore have scoliosis. It can affect anyone, but it is usually diagnosed during the younger years.

Signs of scoliosis may include, prominent scapula (shoulder blade), uneven hips or shoulders, uneven leg lengths, leaning to one side, clothes not fitting well, pain and tightness.

The cause of scoliosis is mostly unknown, hence it is called idiopathic scoliosis and therefore cannot be prevented. Studies show that over 20% of people with idiopathic scoliosis present with spinal pain at the their initial diagnosis.

The only way to completely straighten the spine is through surgery, but this is an extremely invasive procedure and rarely recommended as it is often dangerous and has too many future repercussions.

Though physical therapy such as chiropractic cannot straighten a scoliosis, it is definitely proven for prevention care and symptom management. Many patients have reported a significant improvement in their scoliosis with regular rehabilitation and chiropractic. This is because with regular treatment, proper biomechanics can be restored and the spine can function at full potential.
